Founded in 1997, Onset Technology is the developer of METAmessage® for Wireless — unique software solutions for government and public service agencies, healthcare facilities, professional services companies, and other large smartphone deployments. These solutions provide emergency communications capabilities, productivity enhancements, and secure access to virtually any data on their networks using wireless devices such as BlackBerry® smartphones from Research In Motion (RIM). The software is broadly compatible with virtually all wireless devices and servers including those from partners Microsoft, Palm, Symbian, and RIM. Since its introduction, METAmessage has been widely adopted by Fortune 1000 companies, government agencies, and a range of large service organizations.

Flexible, scalable, and economical METAmessage for Wireless solutions offer administrator-configurable features that are appropriate for any enterprise — from a law firm requiring uninterrupted messaging in the event of infrastructure failure to a government office requiring smartphone access to emergency procedures and contacts. Enterprises can purchase various license packages to let users:

  • Meet continuity of operations (COOP) and emergency response mandates with comprehensive emergency communications capabilities.
  • Improve paging systems by adding the simplicity and effectiveness of paging alerting to smartphones.

Onset customers represent a broad range of industries. In the financial sector, METAmessage is used by firms such as Salomon Smith Barney, the NYSE, UBS Paine Weber, NASDAQ, AIG, MetLife, and the SEC. Government customers include the FDA, the IRS, both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, the US Postal Service, and NASA. Legal customers include many of the country’s best-known law firms such as Hughes Hubbard & Reed, Reed Smith, Dewey Ballantine, Mintz Levin, Ropes & Gray, Palmer & Dodge, and Womble, Carlysle. Other industry categories include communications (NBC, CBS, USA), energy (Shell Oil, Hunt Oil), and healthcare (Pfizer, Cigna).

Onset is one of RIM’s leading ISVs and has partnered with vendors such as AT&T, Microsoft, and Ericsson, and leading mobile operators such as AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, SkyTel, Vodafone, T-Mobile, and mmO2 (BT Cellnet).

Acquisitions 

Onset acquired CMR Communications, a real-time Internet messaging technology developer, in September 2000. Onset acquired Wireless Onramp, an enterprise software company enabling wireless access to corporate information systems, in October, 2002. Onset acquired MessageVine, a leading provider of mobile instant messaging and presence solutions for mobile operators, service providers and enterprises, in May, 2006.
